Guide to Oral Job Interview Preparation - continued
Because interviewing is a skill, you can only improve your style and acumen with practice. Prevail upon family or friends to help you prepare. Ask too for genuine feedback that will be helpful in working out the problem areas.
Practice is important too in assuaging fears and nervousness, and gaining confidence. However, a degree of tension is beneficial toward maintaining a level of alertness that causes you to sit up straight and forward in your seat, leaning toward the interview panel.

Final Touch
Choose and prepare the attire you will use long before the interview day. Know the culture of the organization for which you are being interviewed and dress accordingly, maybe slightly overdress, but definitely don’t under dress, especially if the company has espoused corporate casual (no tie). A business suit is always acceptable. Be certain that your clothing is clean and well ironed. Do a private catwalk, and confirm that the attire is comfortable. Too short or too tight may cause you or others to be distracted or uncomfortable. Minimize accessories, err on the side of too little. You want to be remembered for the right reasons.
Know the location of your interview before the interview date. Do a drive-by if possible. Plan to arrive at the designated office 10 minutes in advance. Allow enough time for traffic, especially the Lagos variety, and the possibility of missing your way, and parking difficulties (if you are driving). Bring extra copies of your resume in a folder or portfolio. Bring a small notebook for notes, but keep note taking to a minimum.
Ask about timeframes for filling the position, how and when you will be notified, and if they would like additional information or materials from you. Be focused on what you can do for the company, what you bring to the position, and why the employer should hire you (I know it may sound hard, seeing you need a job badly, but that is what employers are looking for). The interview is your chance to make your point, give it your best shot!
