National Metallurgical Development Centre [NMDC], Jos established by Act 50 of 1992, is a Research and Development organization with the mandate to carry out research and development activities for the Metallurgical and allied industries for the development of the nation’s solid minerals sector. It has the capacity to offer comprehensive, excellent and effective Research and Development Services aimed at value addition to the vast mineral/material resources of Nigeria that will enhance both economical and technological growth for the nation.

The National Metallurgical Development Centre is a parastatal of the Federal Government of Nigeria which is under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development. It was established in 1973 as the Materials Testing Division of the defunct Nigerian Steel Development Authority (NSDA), to specially handle the analysis of raw materials for the then proposed steel plants.
