The Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) is an agency of the Federal Government of Nigeria (under the supervision of Federal Ministry of Science and Technology) vested with the mandate to promote the development and utilization of Nigeria’s industrial raw materials. It originated from the recommendations of workshop on industrial matters organised by the then Federal Ministry of Industry, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) and the Nigeria Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER) in July, 1983.

RMRDC was established by the RMRDC Act, originally promulgated into law by Decree 39 of 1987 and presently cited as RMRDC Act, CAP R.3 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

Core Activities RMRDC:

  • Provide information which would enable government formulate appropriate policies for domestic raw materials exploitation, development, utilisation and investment
  • Reduce the dependence and expenditure on raw material imports; conserve foreign, increase productivity, increase capacity utilisation, sustainable industrial growth and development
  • Serve the interests of the private sector by facilitating the sourcing, development, and utilisation of domestic raw materials in manufacturing

Entrepreneurship Development

RMRDC provides opportunities for hands-on entrepreneurship skill acquisition in diverse resource-based investment areas of the 10 industrial sectors of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) namely: food, beverage and tobacco; textile and wearing apparel; leather and leather products; wood and wood products; chemicals, pharmaceuticals and plastics, rubber; motor vehicle and miscellaneous; electrical and electronics; pulp and paper; as well as new and advanced materials; to promote value addition to our abundant natural resources.
