SMEDAN to Host 2024 National MSME Conference

The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) has announced the 2024 edition of the National MSME Conference. The event, themed “GROW NIGERIAN: Sustaining an Innovation and Digital-Driven Economy,” will serve as Nigeria’s foremost annual development forum for the MSME sector.

Opening Ceremony
The conference will be inaugurated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR and will take place from October 3rd to 5th, 2024, at the Banquet Hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja. Support for the event will come from the German International Agency (GIZ) and Mastercard.

Conference Overview
Mr. Charles Odii, Director-General/CEO of SMEDAN, described the conference as the largest platform for bringing together entrepreneurs, policymakers, and public and private sector leaders who support Nigeria’s SME ecosystem.

The conference will focus on the development of the MSME sector across eight key industries, as outlined in the GROW Nigerian strategy. This strategy, introduced by Mr. Odii, aims to enhance Nigeria’s local production capabilities and boost export earnings through the provision of Guidance, Opportunities, Resources, and Workforce Support to SMEs.

The eight sectors targeted by the GROW Nigerian strategy include:

  • Agriculture
  • Light Manufacturing
  • Fashion
  • Creative and Entertainment
  • Digital and Innovation
  • Tourism
  • Education

Special Guests and Speakers
The event will feature prominent Nigerian entrepreneurs and international experts. Notable participants include:

  • Tony Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Holdings
  • Hakeem Belo-Osagie, Chairman of Metis Capital Partners
  • Jonathan Ortmans, Founder and President of the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN)

A special highlight will be the premiere of The Smart Money Woman Season 2, created by Arese Ugwu, with co-stars Timini Egbuson and Osas Ighodaro also in attendance.

Conference Features
The event will host several key activities, including:

  • One-Stop Shops: Direct interactions with agencies like NAFDAC, CAC, SON, Nigeria Customs, BOI, NEXIM, NEPC, NIPC, and FIRS.
  • Exhibitions: SMEs will showcase innovative products and services from across Nigeria.
  • Business Clinic: SMEs will receive expert guidance to help address operational challenges.

Additionally, Google, the United Nations, and other industry leaders such as Chude Jideonwo, Co-founder of Red Media and Joy Inc., will conduct masterclasses on digital skills, business growth, finance access, and leveraging trade agreements like AGOA and AfCFTA.

Opportunities for Entrepreneurs
The conference will include a Deals Room, where scalable businesses can secure investments from venture capital firms. A pitch competition will also give entrepreneurs the chance to present their business ideas and obtain funding. Several networking events will help establish connections and partnerships within the industry.

Closing Ceremony
The event will conclude with an awards ceremony hosted by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima. Government officials from across the six regions will be recognized for their contributions to SME development, including efforts in policy reforms, financial investments, and infrastructure improvements.
