Amina Mohammed reappointed as UN Deputy Secretary-General.

Nigeria’s Amina Mohammed will continue in her role as the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN).

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced this on Monday to formalise his prior announcement that Ms. Mohammed would continue in her role during his second term.

Prior to first assuming her role as Deputy Secretary-General in January 2017, Mohammed was Nigeria’s Minister of Environment since November 2015, as well as Special Adviser to former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Post-2015 Development Planning.

Reacting to the development, President Muhammadu Buhari and the North’s mouthpiece, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), have felicitated Mohammed on her re-appointment.

They assured her of the prayers and support of Nigerians, especially the Federal Executive Council (FEC), where she served for some years.

A statement yesterday in Abuja by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said: “President Buhari warmly felicitates  Mohammed on her re-appointment for a second term, assuring of the prayers and support of Nigerians, especially the FEC, where she served for some years.

“The President sends deepest appreciation to Guterres for the confidence reposed in the former Minister of the Environment, giving her another opportunity to serve the global body and humanity, which further enhances the voice and presence of Nigeria…”

ACF, in a statement yesterday in Kaduna by its National Publicity Secretary, Emmanuel Yawe, said: “We are very happy that the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guteres has found her worthy of holding such an office in a global organisation not only once but twice…

“We are proud of her records while she worked for us here in Nigeria and even more proud of the records of competence and dedicated service she exported to the United Nations.”
