The Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration and Prisons Services Board (CDFIPB) was established by Decree No.14 of July 1986 as the ‘Customs, Immigration and Prisons Services Board’ under the Chairmanship of the Minister of Interior. The Board was charged with the responsibility of administering the Customs and Exercise Management Act (CEMA) 1958, the Immigration Act of 1963 and the Prisons Act of 1972. Moreover, it was given the responsibility for the appointment, promotion and discipline of all officers of the Services.
In 1992, the Nigerian Customs Service was excised from the Board and placed under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Finance which changed the name to Immigration and Prisons Services Board (IPB). However, with the enactment of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Act in 2003 which placed the administration of the organization on the Board as well as the transfer of the supervision of the Federal Fire Service (FFS) to the Board in March 2011, the name changed to the current status of ‘Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration and Prisons Services Board (CDFIPB).
