The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital is an agency/parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Health

The hospital now has total bed capacity of 530 with 17 clinical and 14 non clinical department; serving a population of over 25 million in the North East Geopolitical Zone,Comprising Six state namely, Borno, Yobe,Adamawa,Taraba, Bauchi,and Gombe;as well as a sizeable number across the border of the Cameroun,Niger and Chad Republic.

Designated by the Federal Government of Nigeria as Centre of Excellence in Immunology and Infectious Diseases in 1986, the UMTH has also gained recognition through some collaboration with some International Bodies and Institution such as Harvard School of Public Health -PEPFAR, APIN, and PMTCT; the World Health Organization (WHO)- Poliomyelitis and Tuberculosis Research Project,the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) -Radiognosis and Nuclear Medicine and Jefferson’s Ultrasound Research and Education Institute(JUREI), Philadelphia,USA-Diagnostic Ultrasound.
