Amusan sets new PB, Usoro breaks Texas record.

Top Nigerian sprinter, Tobi Amusan, started her season with a bang, setting a new personal best time of 7.87secs in the women’s 60m hurdles at the 2020 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invitational, The PUNCH reports.

Her previous personal best was 7.89secs.

Amusan, who holds the African Games 100m hurdles record (12.68secs), finished second behind Kendra Harrison, who ran a 7.81secs.

She had earlier finished with a time of 7.96secs in the preliminaries to win her heat.

Mecca McGlaston placed third in 8.14secs.

Also, triple jumper, Ruth Usoro, broke the Texas Tech University record twice with a leap of 13.47m and 13.49m to win at the Red Raider invitational event.

Usoro, a sprinter-jumper, is one of Texas Tech University’s most promising newcomers. She won the NJCAA outdoor long jump last year at South Plains.

Speaking after her race, the 2019 NJCAA champion said, “I knew I was capable of the school record. I was going to go for it no matter what, but I was surprised it came this early in the season.”

“I had the school record in my mind, to go for it,” she said after the race.

“But I didn’t expect it to come this early or this quick.

“I feel surprised, and I thank God for how far I’ve come because last year I wasn’t close to this at all.”
