On Page SEO: Site Title

The site title (or site name) is one of the most important features when considering On-Page SEO. This is what tells the search engine what your site is about. You will notice that search engine results come in three rows (at least) for each listing. The first one is derived from the site title while the second (and sometimes third) is from the "Description" meta tag (for Yahoo! and MSN etc) while Google actually crawls your site to pick the actual keywords and surrounding text. The last line is the site URL.

Site Title information is placed between the following tags on your site:

<title>This Is Your Title</title>

A common mistake people do when entering a site title is use something generic. An example would be.

<title>Welcome</title> or <title>Welcome to Mary's Website</title>

For SEO purposes that would be an example of a poor site title (An even worse example would be “untitled document”, if you think I’m joking search in Google for the term “untitled document” or "home". Mary makes beads, and actually employs people and is trying to build a company Mary Beads Limited. Let's say she trains people apart from making different types of beads for sale (I don't know the types of beads, but let's say they are aquamarine, turquoise and clamshell beads .. if there is anything like that. Mary would be much better off using a title like the one below.

<title>Mary Beads Limited Nigeria - Training and Making of Aquamarine, Turquoise, Clamshell Beads</title>

See how the keywords are incorporated into the title tags. By doing this you are telling the search engines that your site is about Mary Beads Limited Nigeria which is into training and making of Aquamarine, Turquoise, Clamshell Beads. When Mary's site gets into Google's index, she will start ranking high for the following keywords

Mary Beads Limited
Mary Beads Limited Nigeria
Beads in Nigeria
Bead Making Training in Nigeria
Aquamarine, Turquoise, Clamshell Beads in Nigeria

And other permutations and combinations of the keywords included in the title tag as shown above. Note that general words like in, as, the, for etc do not count in search engine algorithms, so don't waste space including them in your title tags (unless for the benefit of human visitors)

Taking it further, Mary can create pages about each type of bead, and write about that particular bead and show pictures and prices of the ones in stock. That way, each page will rank high in the search engines for each bead type, drawing people who are looking for that type, who may even eventually buy.

It is a good idea to target two keywords per page. The way to do this is to select one primary keyword and one secondary keyword. The primary keyword is usually the keyword with the most competition and the most potential traffic. While the secondary keyword has less competition and less traffic. This lets you rank well for the secondary keyword whilst also helping you rank well for the primary keyword.
