Hypertension (High Blood Pressure), The Silent Killer

The growing epidemic of obesity around the world is responsible for the explosion in numbers of people who have high blood pressure and diabetes. Any blood preessure reading above 140/90mmHg should be brought to the attention of your doctor. If you are hypertensive, you should own a portable blood pressure monitor at home to regularly check your blood pressure.

Why is Hypertension regarded as a Silent Killer?
Hypertension or High Blood Pressure is responsible for millions of deaths worldwide annually. Globally about 1.5 billion people have hypertension, and about seven million people die from the condition annually. In Africa alone, it is estimated that there are five million Hypertension-related deaths every year. Hypertension harms through its damaging effects on the heart, the kidneys, the blood vessels, the eyes and the brain. It is the most important contributor to cases of Heart attack, Heart failure, Stroke, Kidney failure, and sudden death.



Because it has no symptoms, many people have this condition without knowing it, and the first sign of ill health might be a catastrophic event, hence hypertension is often described as a silent killer. The only means of knowing whether or not you have hypertension is by having a blood pressure check.
