Lagos Celebrates Consumer Rights Day

… Restates commitment to the protection of consumers rights

Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, LASCOPA on Thursday joined the rest of the world to celebrate the 2018 Consumer Rights Protection day, with an assurance to members of the public that the agency was fully prepared to ensure that every resident of the State gets value for goods purchased and services rendered.

The Chairman of the LASCOPA Board, Mrs. Funmi Falana who gave the assurance at a Press Conference today, urged Lagosians to be aware of their rights to know when to seek redress or assistance of the Agency.

She said that LASCOPA will continue to explore every means of creating adequate awareness about its activities and also enlighten the public through its Complaints and Mediation Directorate.

Mrs. Falana disclosed that the establishment of the Agency confirms the State government’s desire of maintaining international standards in the quality of goods and services that Lagosians purchase.

“I am sure that you are aware that Lagos State is always setting the pace with popular, masses-oriented policies and that is why we are joining our counterparts across the world today 15th of March to celebrate the annual Consumer Rights Protection Day as a way of telling members of the public that protection of their rights is of uttermost concern to the present administration in the State.” the Chairman reiterated.

She advised members of the public who feel their rights have been infringed upon to take advantage of the open door policy of the Agency to lodge their complaints, stressing that the entire process of complaint-resolution is entirely free.

Earlier, during a sensitization walk from Alausa Secretariat, Ikeja to the Agency’s office at Allen Avenue, the General Manager of the Agency, Mrs. Oluwakemi Olugbode explained that LASCOPA would cause offending companies or individual to compensate consumers affected by the effects of harmful products or services of such company.

She added that the agency will also ensure replacement of hazardous products with safe products and seek ways and means of eliminating hazardous products from Lagos markets in conjunction with other relevant stakeholders.

“As part of our responsibilities, we will periodically publish the list of products that are not safe for members of the public through the various mass media and will consequently advise members of public not to buy such products” she declared.
