NABTEB was established in 1992 to take over the conduct of examinations hitherto conducted by the City and Guild (C&G) of London and Royal Society of Arts (RSA) of London, and the technical and business examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in order to domesticate their examinations and tailor them to address societal needs.

Essentially, while TVET builds skills for work and life, NABTEB assesses and certifies these skills for specific career pathways that lead to engagement in quality self-employment, as high-skilled employees and for admission into tertiary education. NABTEB is key player in the Nigerian educational system and is a leading contributor to the development and implementation of educational policies and strategies at all levels of government, especially in the area of TVET.
