Former Super Eagles captain and coach Sunday Oliseh has joined the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the only body empowered to set and interpret the Laws of the Game.
Oliseh broke the news on his official X account Monday, writing, “Thrilled to announce my appointment to the International Football Association Board (IFAB)! …Honored to contribute to its mission!” His role on IFAB’s Football Advisory Panel gives him a seat at the table where decisions on offside, VAR protocols, handball rules and time-wasting measures are made—affecting matches from neighborhood pitches to World Cup finals.
Founded in 1886 by the four British football associations, IFAB today guides FIFA and oversees global rule-making. Oliseh’s appointment marks the first time a Nigerian has joined the body, and only the second African, giving the continent a direct voice in football’s evolution.
“It’s a proud day for Nigerian football,” said a representative of the Nigerian Football Federation. “Sunday’s insight and experience will help shape fairer, more transparent rules for players and fans everywhere.”
During his storied playing career — which included spells at Borussia Dortmund and Juventus — Oliseh earned respect for his tactical acumen. He later led Nigeria’s national team as coach before moving into governance. At IFAB, he will work alongside names like Arsène Wenger, who chairs the Technical Advisory Panel, and other global experts in the sport’s laws and innovations.
Wenger and Oliseh first collaborated in FIFA’s Technical Study Group at recent World Cups, analyzing match data and suggesting improvements. “Sunday brings a unique perspective,” Wenger commented. “His voice will enrich our discussions on the game’s future.”
Oliseh’s new role reflects Nigerian football’s growing influence on the world stage. As IFAB prepares to review key regulations this year, his appointment ensures that the concerns of African players and officials shape the next chapter of the beautiful game.
