Web presence entails an existing company registering it's presence on the web in line with global trends. Every credible organization has a website whereby clients can get in touch with it locally and internationally.
The way it is practised in Nigeria, companies just put up a website to fulfill all righteousness. They do not maintain or update it. The websites is full of broken links (links to nowhere) while their contact details are out of date.
Obviously these companies do not have an in-house webmaster, and whatever arrangement they have for updating the site does not seem to be working.
Often times, these companies do not renew their domain name or webhosting, end eventually lose the site. When you visit the site, you see a strange directory in its place. What has happened is that some smart Alec has snapped up the domain name, and is waiting for the company to come buy it back (especially if it is a big company), knowing fully well that they cannot be sued to court.
A company website is much more than a decoration. It is a powerful advertising tool. Marriot hotels gets much more online hotel reservations than the traditional offline one, yet you find many hotels in Nigeria without websites, you wonder if they are operating in this millennium.
A website is a very powerful marketing tool, much cheaper than full page colour adverts. A well optimized site pulls in tons of traffic, that translates to clients. In summary, company websites should make money for the company. With a website, prospective clients can get in touch with you from around the world 24/7. With a bit of extra programming and functionality, they can pay for services and transact business with you after closing hours. When we go to bed in Nigeria, folks in the far east (Australia, Singapore, Malaysia etc) are waking up to a new day while the Americas is waking up to the passing day. So at any time, someone somewhere is working, and browsing.
With a strong web presence, backed by an in-house web team, you can promote your business, reach out to new clients and upgrade your bottom line.
