Emir of Kano

Kano Emirate Council

The emir is the president of Emirate Council or EC. Traditional kingmakers, local government chairmen and nominated individuals who can significantly contribute to decision making are the council’s other members. EC has at least nine functions.

The council must unify the actions of Local Government Councils through discussion of prevailing concerns, development of general proposals, collaboration of local governments’ development plans and consideration of religious topics.

The Emirate Council must promote culture and the arts, decide on concerns regarding chieftaincy, evaluate traditional laws and customs, express viewpoints on significant emirate issues to government and other significant organizations.

The 56th emir starting from Bagauda and 13th Fulani emir Alhaji Ado Bayero began leading the Emirate Council in 1963. Bayero is a genuine patriot, peace lover and royal father for all his subjects. In the presence of recent advancements, he acted as the custodian of cultural heritage. While embracing new progress, he has safeguarded the welfare of the old traditions.

The Emirate Council is the powerhouse in the fields of security maintenance and information management. The emir acts as both a religious leader and a community ruler and he possesses the greatest traditional authority. He is greatly revered by his people, the religious leaders, and the political rulers both at federal and state levels. Emir Bayero obtains immediate details on all incidents that are of great importance and his views are quickly distributed and acknowledged by the people under him. The present emir is a mighty force in the administration of state protection. He strongly supports the government in upholding the law and achieving order.
