History
Obubra Local Government Area is one of the oldest Local Government Areas in the country. Established as a British Colonial District, its jurisdiction extended to parts of present day Base and Akamkpa as well as Abi, Yakurr and parts of Ogoja and Ikom in cross River State. But today, it consists of a mono-cultural group of people of Mbembe descent. The major units of this member speaking people include Aduni Ofumbongha, Okum and Osopong. Other splinter groups of large nationalities that also co-exist with their Mbembe neighbours include Yala (Nkum Okpambe), Ekuri, Isobo and Izzi speaking people. Analytically, speaking, Obubra, somehow, shares the national characteristics of being a multi-ethnic or plural society.
The life of the people is largely determined by the prevailing environmental condition in which they have found themselves. Thus, as a basically agrarian society, he people are simple, unassuming and accommodating and live a life of relative contentment.
The National Youth Service Corps, Cross River State Orientation Camp is situated in Obubra Village of this Local Government Area. It has an area of 1,115 km² and a population of 172,444 at the 2006 census.
This town is endowed with abundant natural resources including agricultural, forest and mineral resources. The rich topsoil is laced underneath with unfathomable and extensive beds of limestones, quartz, pyrite, salt, iron ore, day, lead, sand and gravel. The area is also blessed with a lot of unharnessed tourist attraction including fascinating flora and fauna.
In terms of agriculture
Obubra lies within the rich fringes of the tropical rainforest zone of south Earthen Nigeria with abundant natural resources including agricultural, forest and mineral resources. Basically the area is agrarian.
The rich top soil is laced underneath with unfathomable and extensive beds of limestone, quartz, pyrite, salt, iron ore, clay lead, sand and gravel. Traditionally, the people are predominantly farmers and yam is the king of crops. Cassava, plantain, and banana are other crops of commercial importance for them.

Following the creation of new local governments in the state, Obubra was split into Obubra local government area with Obubra as headquarters, Yakurr with Ugep as headquarters at Itigidi. The Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB) College of Agriculture sited at Ovonum has turned out hundreds of students since it was established by the Cross River State Government a few years ago.
